»ÆÉ«app invites all students who are serious about realizing their calling as Christians. TMU stands out as one of the few schools in the nation that requires every applicant to provide both a personal statement of faith in Jesus Christ and a recommendation from their pastor as part of the admission process. This contrasts with âopen enrollmentâ schools, which allow students of any faith or no faith to attend. This practice maintains a very distinct culture at TMU, allowing us to focus on our mission of providing believers with an education rooted unswervingly in Christ and Scripture.
All of our faculty, staff, administrators, and board members also fully affirm TMUâs doctrinal statement, which has remained essentially unchanged since the institution’s inception in 1927. We live it out on and off-campus and teach it in the classroom, meaning students at TMU receive a cohesive, united point of view from all of the schoolâs employees.
Here, you can read exactly why that requirement is in place.
There are few people on campus who can explain as clearly as Harry Walls why »ÆÉ«app is one of the few schools in the country to require a statement of faith in Jesus Christ and a pastorâs recommendation for admission.
So, we asked him.
âFundamentally, our ministry at TMU is disciple-making,â says Walls, who has been campus pastor at Masterâs since 2015. âWe deal with Christians because theyâre new creations, and we partner with the Spirit of God to promote the work of God. And what we do with students is predicated on that, right?
âYou preach the Bible, itâs not falling on deaf ears â itâs transformational. You call them to Christ-like living because the assumption is they want to live for Christ, their appetites have changed, their desires have changed. Otherwise, youâre trying to cause somebody to live alien to who they are, which is frustrating for them and futile for us.â
Ultimately, Masterâs aims to train students to know and live for God so that other people see Him. Namely, the school wants everything that takes place in chapel, in the classroom and on the athletic field to prepare young people to be God glorifiers, gospel ambassadors and kingdom influencers, ready to excel in their chosen vocation and serve effectively in the local church.
âWhat happens at Masterâs is people get trained in the truth,â Walls says.
At this point, Walls, who played football at Brown University, couldnât help but slip into a sports analogy.
âIf you knowingly admit non-Christians, itâs like recruiting athletes who canât play the game,â he says. âThey donât have the asset pool. Weâre not mad at them. They just donât have what they need to be successful in the training process they will enter into here.â
Walls said that an applicantâs testimony is essential because it bears witness to a transformed life. The pastorâs recommendation is meant to validate that â âto the degree that we can.â
One reason the pastorâs recommendation is so important is that TMU is trying to foster a community that will support biblical convictions, ânot threaten them by bad influences.â
âYou could have a person who professes Christ, but lives like the devil on a holiday in real life,â Walls says. âAnd you bring them in here because theyâve made a profession of faith. But they have no validating fruit and evidence. Itâs the âYou call me, Lord, Lord, and donât do the things that I say.â There needs to be evidence of the new birth. And if thereâs not, thatâs not healthy for them. And itâs not healthy for the community that weâre aspiring to put together.â
Of course, not everyone who signs a statement of faith and receives a pastorâs stamp of approval has been born again. âProfession does not equal possession,â Walls says. But when non-believers âhappen to be here, theyâre exposed to the truth. Weâre not throwing them away. Weâre praying for them. Weâre investing in them. And weâre trusting the Lord to do a work in them.â
To be sure, Walls said, Masterâs is not looking for perfection.
âWeâre dealing with all levels of maturity,â he says. âAnd even people who come in here who know a lot and served in their youth group get saved here.â
